Moving Tips

2-4 Weeks Before You Move

1. Give your forwarding address to the post office.
2. Notify your credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, and bank of the change of address.
3. Write a list of friends, relatives, and business colleagues who need to be notified of the move.
4. Arrange to have utilities disconnected at your old home and connected at your new one.
5. Cancel the newspaper.
6. Decide whether you will use a professional moving company or rent a truck and do it yourself. If using professional movers, read the "Get Moving: Using a Moving Company" information provided on this website.
7. Start cleaning out. More stuff = more money and more work to move. Get rid of things you no longer need. Donate to charities such as the “House of Faithe” or the Phoenix Dream Center (info under “Give Back” link) or have a yard sale with items that may still be useful to others.
8. Start a file for the details of your move. Use it to store all of your notes and lists and also all of your moving-related expenses. Depending on your reason for moving, you may be entitled to a tax deduction for those expenses.
9. Complete any repair work needed on your old home.
10. If you are planning to make changes to your new home (new carpet, paint, etc.), try to schedule those services to be done now so that you don't have to be inconvenienced once you move in.
11. (Self-packers) Start packing nonessential and seldom used articles (fine china, specialty cookware, out-of-season clothing, etc.)
12. Make personal travel arrangements (flights, hotel, and rental cars) for your trip.
13. Start using up items in your freezer and refrigerator that you will not be able to take with you.
14. Make arrangements for transporting your pets and any house plants.
15. Get copies of medical and dental records and prescriptions for your family and pets.
16. Get copies of children's school records for transfer.

One Week Before You Move

1. (Self-packers) Begin your serious packing. Make sure to label the contents of all boxes and pack carefully. Box essential items together, set in a special place and write "Open First/Load Last" on these boxes so that they can be easily identified.
2. Have your automobile serviced if you're traveling by car.
3. Dispose of toxic or flammable items that can't be moved. Drain the gas and oil from gas-powered tools such as lawn mowers, etc.
4. If you have young children or pets, arrange for a babysitter to watch them on moving day so that they are not in the way.
5. Pay all outstanding bills. Be sure to indicate your new address on payment receipts.
6. Retrieve items from your safety deposit box and any secret hiding places in your home. Plan to take important papers, jewelry, cherished family photos and irreplaceable mementos and vital computer files with you on the trip.

1-2 days before you move:

1. Self-packers- finish packing. If you have professional movers, they should arrive at this time to start the packing process.
2. Empty and defrost your refrigerator and freezer. Clean both with a disinfectant and let them air out. Put baking soda inside to keep them smelling fresh. Also, clean and air out your stove, microwave, dishwasher and any other appliances that will remain in the home.
3. Make sure you have your driver's license, auto registration, insurance records, checkbook, medications, essential toiletries, flashlight, toilet paper, baby or childcare items (including car games), and your notes containing moving information set aside to take with you on the trip.
4. Write directions to your new home for the driver of your truck. Provide your new phone number and include phone numbers where you can be reached in transit.

If you’ve just sold your home or it is currently on the market, hire someone to come in and clean immediately after you move out. If necessary, have the carpets and tile grout professionally steamed. If your home is still on the market- have someone paint any dramatically personalized rooms a more neutral color.

Items to Have on Hand for the New Owners

1. Owner's manuals for items left in the house.
2. Warranties for any items left in the house.
3. A list of local service providers.
4. Garage door opener.
5. Extra set of house keys and mail box keys if applicable
6. Code to burglar alarm and phone number of monitoring service if not discontinued.
7. Your forwarding address and phone number.
